Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp, never made it clear how exactly it plans to put ads in WhatsApp but it has also never ruled out the possibility. David Fischer, Facebook’s vice president of business and marketing partnerships, last month in an interview with Adweek had said that the company will figure out ways to bring ads to the chat app. It seems that it has finally figured it out.
A WhatsApp spokesperson has confirmed Tech Crunch that the chat app is planning to run ads inside the Status tab of the app. To recall, ‘Status’ is the second tab you see in your WhatsApp window right between the ‘Chats’ and ‘Calls’ tabs. Similar to Snapchat Stories features, photos or video posted inside Status disappear after 24 hours.
Starting year 2019 WhatsApp will show ads in the Status tab. We hope that just like our posts, ads in the Status will also disappear after 24 hours.

“WhatsApp does not currently run ads in Status though this represents a future goal for us, starting in 2019. We will move slowly and carefully and provide more details before we place any Ads in Status,” Tech Crunch quotes a WhatsApp spokesperson.
WhatsApp is a free to use app but lately it has been exploring ways to monetise itself. WhatsApp Business, company’s standalone app for businesses that allows businesses to contact consumers, is one such effort from WhatsApp to generate revenue. Running ads in WhatsApp Status would be another big step by the company in this regard. WhatsApp Status has more over 450 million users, far more than the Snapchat Stories. It could earn help WhatsApp earn huge profits.
WhatsApp sooner or later will run ads but it is confirmed that it will. In this case, running ads in Status is any day a better option than cramming the chats or calls windows with ads. It will help the app appear clean. Ads will appear under one section only and not flash anywhere inside the ad. Also, you can choose to ignore these ads by simply leaving them untouched inside the Status tab. Like the regular Status posts, WhatsApp may also give you an option to mute these ads so that you can view other posts and avoid the ads.
